If you’re a loan officer or loan originator, you’re required to complete continuing education classes. Fortunately, you can take late continuing education (CE) courses to satisfy both state and national mortgage broker CE requirements.

At Diehl, we’re committed to getting you up to speed by offering NMLS late CE courses to renew your license. Each state has its own set of requirements, and we’re able to work with you to ensure you meet your state’s respective obligations.

NMLS Late Continuing Education Requirements

At Diehl, we offer mortgage licensing training to mortgage loan officers (MLOs) to ensure they can legally offer mortgage financing for their clients. As an MLO, you’re required to complete NMLS continuing education courses to renew your license. However, if you’ve missed the deadline requirements for the year, you’ll have to complete NMLS late CE courses to achieve NMLS license reinstatement. Diehl is proud to offer NMLS Late CE online courses to help you reinstate your MLO license.

Complete a minimum of 8 hours of NMLS-approved mortgage education annually

The Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (SAFE Act) established a nationwide licensing and registration system for residential MLOs. The SAFE Act also requires MLOs to accomplish federal registration and state licensing and registration through the same online registration system, the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS).

One of the requirements outlined by the SAFE Act is for MLOs to complete a minimum of 8 hours of NMLS-approved mortgage education every year. At Diehl, our 8-hour NMLS Late CE course satisfies the requirements set forth by the SAFE Act for those who’ve missed the deadline for renewing their mortgage license.

State-Specific Late CE Courses

Each state has its own set of mortgage licensing requirements, so it’s important to understand what each state asks of its MLOs. Click on any of the states below to get Late CE.

How do I renew my NMLS License?

You must renew your NMLS License annually generally between November 1 and December 31. Take these steps to renew your NMLS license before the end of the year.

Step 1: Prepare for the Process

There are a number of things you must do to be eligible for renewal, including NMLS Continuing Education (CE). Make sure that you’ve completed your CE before attempting to renew your license.

If you’ve never renewed your NMLS license before, you’ll want to check out the NMLS Renewal Handbook as a guide for what you can expect during the process for both institutions and individuals. You’ll be renewing your license online, so make sure that you have your login and password available and a credit or debit card to pay the renewal fee.

Step 2: Batch Upload

Institutions can use batch upload to process the renewal and reactivation of individuals once your institution registration has been renewed.

Step 3: Ensure Up-to-Date Records

Log into your NMLS account to ensure that your record is up to date. If you don’t know your username or password, you can have the information sent to you through the login screen. Once you’re logged in, check that your MU1R or MU4R is up to date before renewing.

Step 4: Confirm Renewal Process Completion

Ensure that you and your MLOs have all completed the renewal process. You can do this through the Composite View tab or the Renewal/Reactivation Activity report. MLOs will receive email notifications from NMLS to confirm the completion of license renewals.

How many hours of Continuing Education (CE) are required for NMLS?

Each state has its own NMLS online Continuing Education (CE) requirements. If you’re licensed in multiple states, make sure that you know what your Continuing Education requirements are. The SAFE ACT requires 8 hours of MLO continuing education annually.

The NMLS CE course license renewal credit hours are also categorized and include:

  • Three hours of Federal Laws and Regulations
  • Two hours of Ethics
  • Two hours of non-traditional home loan training
  • One hour of electives

For more information about Continuing Education, you can visit the NMLS Resource Center

When is NMLS Continuing Education due?

Your NMLS Continuing Education (CE) courses should be completed ten days before the actual license renewal due date. This allows enough time for your NMLS Continuing Education credits to be uploaded into the NMLS database for your renewal paperwork. Finishing your CE too close to the renewal deadline might mean that you won’t get your license renewed on time.

Adhere to the following NMLS deadlines to ensure you’re able to renew your license on time:

  • SMART Renewal Deadline: December 10
  • At-Risk Deadline: December 17
  • Guaranteed Missed Deadline: December 31
What happens if my NMLS license expires?

If you do not renew your NMLS license before December 31, you will be placed on an inactive registration status. To become active again, you must reactivate your registration the same way you would renew your license.

If your license has expired, it means that you didn’t have an active federal registration for five years or that you failed to obtain or maintain a valid state license for five years, which means that your test has expired, and you’ll need to retake it. NMLS will send you notifications when your test is about to expire so that you can either get your license activated or let your test expire if you’re leaving the mortgage industry for good.

If you do need to retake the test, Diehl Education offers extensive and comprehensive MLO test preparation that can help you relearn anything about the industry that you might have forgotten over the past five years.

How does Diehl help MLOs prepare for NMLS renewal?

Whether you want to add an MLO license or need help preparing for renewal, our NMLS Continuing Education (CE) classes can help. Diehl can help MLO’s prepare for renewal by ensuring they meet the necessary 8-hour requirements of CE. Our program also provides content that’s constantly updated so that you’re not learning old materials. All of our Federal and state-specific CE courses are updated with new information each year.

Not only that, but once your CE course has been completed, Diehl will take care of the paperwork and report your competition to the NMLS within 24-48 business hours to ensure that you have a speedy renewal process.
